What is the Footer in a Web Page Design?

The footer, as its name suggests, is the final piece of content located at the bottom of each page of your web site.

The purpose of the footer is to signal to the user that they are at the bottom of the web page and to provide links or shortcuts to other areas of your web site. The footer is the area that many users expect to find the ‘fine print’ - legal information such as ‘terms and conditions’, ‘privacy policies’, etc.

Often the footer will include short cuts to key web site content, to save the user from having to scroll back up the page to where the standard menus are located. Common short cuts are:

• Customer service

• Satisfaction guaranteed

• Terms and conditions

• Privacy policy

• Contact us.

It is common practice by website development companies to leave their ‘signature’ in a client’s footer to link back to their own web site.

On e-commerce web page designs, a security badge will often be located in the footer.
