Remember a website should not only "look good" A website is a live business tool with real business objectives. There are a number of factors that must be considered during the design process to ensure your website design produces results. It is the job of the Zeald design team to ensure that the design fits this criteria where possible and if it does not, that you understand the areas that do not conform and the reasons and implications for not conforming.
You are not bound to this criteria but we strongly recommend that you understand this criteria before and during the review of your website design. It is our role to convey this advise to you but of course the design decision is ultimately yours in the end. Armed with the knowledge you are able to make an informed decision to disregard this criteria and these recommendations
Fast Loading
Your website needs to load fast. Studies have shown that if visitors have to wait for more than 8-10 seconds for a page to load then you run a serious risk of losing them.
"But my customers all use broad band, download speed is not an issue"
Sure, internet connection speeds are increasing every day, well some days........but so are the users expectations. 8 - 10 seconds may acceptable using 56 k modems, but users with broadband these days expect a website to load instantly 2 - 3 seconds.
User-friendly layout & clear navigation
Your website needs to be user-friendly. Everything needs to be as simple and as obvious as possible. Your website should provide your visitors with all the common things that you expect to find on most websites. When laying out the information and common components on a website the goal is not to be unique and quirky– this will just confuse your visitors.
“But, what about personality? Surely we don’t want our website to be bland and just like every other website?”
Convey your personality using your branding, photographs and content (words and text). Don’t “mess” with the structure and layout of the website unless you are prepared to sacrifice your conversion.
Search engine friendly
One thing to remember is that you're not only designing to appeal to your visitors, but also to the search engine spiders.
Understand this: Search engine Spiders need textual content to feed on, so if you want to scare them away, use images and nothing else. Users are searching for information and they use keywords to find it. If you want your users to find a particular page of your website make sure it has text and lots of it, full of the keywords your users are searching with.
Easy to maintain & update
It is very important that your website is designed in such a way that makes it easy for you to edit and update the information on a regular basis. If for some reason the task is difficult, and time consuming you will find that the process becomes frustrating for you, and you will be less inclined to make changes. When the information becomes stale and out of date, your users and the search engine spiders will be less inclined to visit.
